we all want a story.

ABOUT

The Ingénue is an atypical coming of age story centering around the period of early adulthood in which  the disappointing realities of adult life, and one’s own limitations - in talent, finances, luck, dedication, etc - confront and restrict the whimsical dreams of childhood. Our protagonist Giselle, discouraged by her ostensible failure to achieve the stardom that she’s always dreamed of, decides to end her life in a spectacular way – by throwing herself from the Hollywood sign, in a gesture inspired by the real-life tragedy of failed 1930’s actress Peg Entwhistle. Upon Giselle’s arrival in Los Angeles and subsequent failed attempts at completing this macabre mission, she finds herself surrounded by a cast of characters in similar turning points in their lives, caught between surrendering their dreams or fanatically clinging to them despite their growing disconnection from reality. The question of The Ingénue is this - can Giselle and the people around her find happiness in their own less-than-sensational existences? The Ingénue is a comedic story of myopia, alienation, disappointment, Peter Pan syndrome, and the stunted, chronically wistful people created by unchecked fantasy. We aim to explore the tug-of-war between contentment and ambition, between reality and performance, and between reciprocal love and selfish obsession, in a culture that so prizes individual exceptionalism and worldly success above all else.
